El Molino-Chagual

This area is truly in the heart of the Marañon, and extremely remote. However, the birding makes the difficult drive worthwhile. Purple-backed Sunbeam is perhaps the main prize, but hardly behind are Great Spinetail and Buff-bridled Inca-Finch. Yellow-faced Parrotlet is also relatively easy here.

This is an extremely remote area. Arrival from Cajamarca takes about two days, while Pataz, on the east side of the Marañon Valley, is about half a day away but does not provide any relief from the remoteness, and the nearest pavement in that direction is a further two days south to Huánuco.
