Thinking of Birding Peru?
Peru is one of the world's best birding countries, and a visit to any part of the country can be rewarding. The incredible selection of birds makes planning a trip difficult. What sites do you want to visit? What birds do you want to see? What sort of accommodations are you looking for? There are two ways we help sort out the overwhelming options for you on these pages: a map of Peru showing the main birding sites and a list of key birds. We would appreciate any feedback on how we can improve these pages.

Peru's Target Birds
A few notes on this list
1)
The list is divided into three parts (non-passerines, suboscine passerines and oscine passerines) to prevent overly lengthy downloading time. With the same goal, scientific names have been left out; consult our Peru Checklist [161 KB] if in doubt.
2)
Included are birds which we consider potential target birds in Peru. Included by default are all endemic birds (marked *). We did not think it practical list all of Peru's birds here. If you have think any species is missing, please let us know - you determine your targets, not us!
3) The species fall into 3 categories: a) The most sought-after species occurring at sites we visit regularly. These have a link to an individual page with relevant details. b) Birds which are common, widespread or for which there is no specific information, occurring at sites we visit regularly. For these, there are simply links to the pages for the sites at which they occur. c) Species not occurring at sites we visit regularly. For information on these species, email us
4) For category a and b birds, sites are listed by number (as used above) and trips on which they can be seen are listed by letter (see reference chart on list page) to reduce downloading time. If the site or trip is in brackets, the species may to occur but is unrecorded recently (to our knowledge). For sites and trips where the species considered reliable, the reference to the site or trip is in bold. There is a reference chart of sites and trips on the list page.
