The altiplano to the south of Puno is home to a number of interesting birds. Laguno Umayo is home an isolated and dwindling population of Short-winged Grebes, while in the grassland surrounding the lake Ornate Tinamou, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Golden-spotted Ground-Dove and Grey-breasted Seedsnipe can be found. Darwin's Nothura might also be expected in the area, but we have yet to see it here. Further out and even higher up, Lesser (Puna) Rhea, Scale-throated Earthcreeper and Puna Canastero are among the possibilities. Connecting
