Salinas

The high puna between Arequipa and Puno is arid, barren and has a low diversity of birds. However, as is typical with this sort of area, the ones there are good. Salinas is a salt pan which boast especially all three of Peru's flamingos - Chilean, Andean and Puna. Also in the area Andean Avocet and Puna Miner can be found. A little bit down the road, there is some Polylepis forest where Tamarugo Conebill, Black-hooded Sierra-Finch and White-throated and Straight-billed Earthcreepers can be found.

This area is best visited as part of a day's driving between Arequipa and Puno.
