At mid-elevation in the arid Cordillera Negra, San Damian is home of several difficult birds. Piura Chat-Tyrant is fairly easily found in the patchy forest a couple of hours' walk above the village, while the same area is home to the more elusive Russet-bellied Spinetail and Koepcke's Screech-Owl. Bay-crowned Brush-Finch and the local races of Tropical Pewee and Tropical Gnatcatcher can also be found. The local Great Inca-Finch is probably easier to find here than anywhere else in its restricted range. Connecting
